The Clarksville Chess Club is free and open to
the public of all ages. Our members range in age from 6 to 86 years old.
We have no formal organizational structure, i.e. no elected officers, or
appointed directors. We charge no membership dues or other fees of any
kind. (See Annual Book Drive ) Basically, we just meet and play Chess with
whoever shows up. We always welcome visitors and are happy to teach anyone
the basics of the game. The Clarksville Chess Club was founded in March1995 by a gentleman named James David (Dave) Williams. Although Dave is no longer a member, we still honor, and respect him, as our Founder. The club has one member who has attained the Title 'National Master.' See our Club Ladder for a listing of the playing strengths of all our members. More than 90% of our members are rated tournament players. We have one member who is a licensed Tournament Director, and another one of our members is a retired National Tournament Director. Our current membership represents over 300 years of Chess playing experience. Three of our members are Chess coaches in the local schools. Another one of our members teaches Chess to the Montgomery County Home School Cooperative. Prior to the year 2000, the club organized and hosted 17 Scholastic Chess tournaments at various schools in the Clarksville area. In 2000 the club created the annual tournament known as the NTWO. The club was also responsible for bringing the Tennessee State Championship Tournament to Clarksville in 1998, the Tennessee State Championship was 52 years old, and that was the first time ever it had been held in Clarksville. It returned again in 2001. Because of Clarksville's proximity to the border of Kentucky and Tennessee we have members who have close ties with both the Tennessee Chess Association and the Kentucky Chess Association. One of our members sat on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Chess Association for 7 years. Approximately one third of our members live or work in Kentucky and participate in the Kentucky Chess Association’s program of Chess events. The Clarksville Chess Club operates as part of a not-for-profit organization known as Queen City Chess. Queen City Chess was organized and registered with the IRS to obtain a FEIN for the purpose of doing business as the Clarksville Chess Club. This action was taken so the club could open bank accounts and conduct business as a legitimate entity under the law. This need has not materialized as of yet, but we have the capability to do so without delay. It is not the goal of the Clarksville Chess Club to produce Chess champions, but if that happens while we're having fun and enjoying our passion, so much the better. Come be part of our club! |
