04-24-2010 Roy and Kyle played in the 9th Southern Class Championship this weekend.

Roy book ended the tournament, winning is first and last games. In between was not so good. Final result was tie for 9th in the class E section. 34 rating points adjusted downward.

Kyle, playing in his second official tournament, braved the class D section. He scored only one win, but that was enough to gain 110 rating points. He now stands at 911.

04-16-2010 Autumn and Colton went to Ohio this weekend with some good results:

AUTUMN played in the 2010 All Girls National Championship (14 under division). Her  4 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss were good enough to tie her for 2nd place. A really good result. Overall, she played very solid Chess. She gained 12 rating points. GOOD JOB!!

COLTON started the 2010 National High School Championship (under 1200 section) with a BANG BANG. He was out gunned the entire tournament and walked out with a whooping 99 point rating gain. His opponents out rated him as follows +250, +293, +154, +200, + 196, +310, +293. By any standard, he was in line to lose every game, but he won three out of seven. Very Nice for such opposition. His rating went to 987.

03-30-2010 Autumn played for the Montgomery Central High School team this weekend in the 2010 Tennessee State Team Finals. She scored 2 wins with 1 loss. She wound up in a tie for 5th overall out of 69 players. I do not have the overall team results.

02-5-2010 The match against Bowling Green wound up 15 1/2 to 8 1/2 in Clarksville's favor. A few observations... Some of our players did not cope with the clock well and lost on time. Also, there were too many 'Is this touch move?' questions. I suggest that we use clocks at the chess club and play touch move!! - Henry
02-04-2010  Several of us are going to play an unofficial match in Bowling Green and will not be at the club tonight.
01-23-2010 The 2010 Regional 3 Qualifying Tournament was played at Austin Peay State Univeristy. The top players would qualify for the State Individual Finals held at Tennessee Tech.

12-5-2009 Autumn, Colton, and Cheyenne participated in the MEIGS Scholastics Saturday.  The results were not stellar, but still, a good learning experience. See their BIOS for details.
10-17-2009 We had several players compete in the 'HEART OF TENNESSEE OPEN - 2009'. Floyd Parton and Jose Singson had the best results tying for 11th overall. Both won 3 games and lost two. Blake and Autumn both tied for 26th overall, both winning two games and losing three:

Floyd:  Rated 1470 going in to the Tournament beat two class 'A' players and a lower rated player. He lost only to a Class 'B' and an Expert. His rating flies up to 1649 - a great job!!

Jose : Rated 1720 going in to Murfreesboro lost only to Ron Burnett (2403) and Justice (2128). He gained 4 rating points - up to 1724. Nice job

Blake: Rated 1168 going in, was facing the gauntlet. He beat a 1446 and a 1519 (hundreds of points higher than himself), losing to a 1371, 1797, and 1701. Talk about tough - the average opponent was 400 points higher! Very good result, his rating jumping to 1519 WOW!

Autumn: Rated 1453, faced a master and a class 'A' player. Coming very close to beating the class 'A'. She dropped on game on time, having a winning advantage at that time.

They really enjoyed themselves.

6-4-2009 Well she's done it before and is doing it again. Autumn will represent Tennessee in the All Girls tournament in Texas. Give her some encouragement and congratulations when you see her. WELL DONE!!
5-25-2009 Bill and I made the trip to Chicago Open. We were Killed. Fatigue played a huge part for both of us, every night at midnight my games were still going. Night play is for younger folks who do not seem affected. Well, we tried!
5-16-2009 The Tennessee Senior Chess Championship we held this weekend in Crossville Tennessee. A very strong field of players showed up including four Masters, two Experts, four Class 'A' players and a pot full of others. Three of our club members participated, Richard Higgins, Bill Bragg and Henry Robinson.

Richard's results were mixed scoring 50%. He beat who he should have, and lost to who he should have. As a matter of fact, there were no upsets in the entire tournament till the last round. That is amazing. It shows that everyone brought their 'A' game. This put Richard in a tie for 13th place.

Bill did very well winning all of his games but the last. This tied him for 3rd overall! He also won the over 70 title and prize money, picking up 3 rating points! Congratulations Bill!

Henry was able to win all of his games giving him clear 1st place and the title 'Tennessee Senior Chess Champion!

4-30-2009 Well, we finished our first club tournament. This was not USCF rated. Everyone was given a 1000 rating. We had a very good time, several vivid characters attended helping to make this quite an experience. More details and games coming up shortly.

Results The results of our first club tournament since relocating to APSU.

04-18-2009 Autumn just finished the 2009 Tennessee Girls Championship. She had a fine result with 3 out of 4, tied for 2nd place. Having examined her games they were of a very high quality. In the final game, she held a huge advantage nearly the entire game, only to be spoiled by one blunder. But what a great result. Her rating continues to climb going to 1364.
04-03-2009 This was an incredible weekend of chess. The SUPERNATIONALS were incredible!! Grandmasters gave lectures, signed books, chit-chatted... it was G-R-E-A-T!! I had a ball. Oh yeah, we did have some of our players participate:

Autumn scored 3 wins 1 draw and 3 losses. All of her opponents out ranked her by over 100 rating points. Scoring 3.5 with that caliber of opponent, is a wonderful result. She gained 51 rating points! This takes her rating to 1339, an all time high! Be sure you congratulate her on this accomplishment.

Colton scored 3 wins with 4 losses. This was an incredible success. His opponents were an average of 255 points higher rated that he, yet he scored 3 wins. A great result. He gained a whopping 121 rating points... unbelievable!  Taking his rating to 897, again, an all time high!

Cheyenne also played in the K1 section. This was her first tournament and I have never seen anyone so happy. She came bouncing out of her second round game, just bouncing up and down, with a chess book under her arm singing 'I lost, I lost, I lost', just as happy as could be. Later, she came out with a full point, 'I won, I won, I won' - her opponent didn't show up, she gained the full point - again, just as happy as could be. She received a provisional rating of 103 with her one draw!

Travis scored 1 win 1 draw and 5 loses in his very first tournament. The K1 section was not as easy as you might think. Most of these kids came from other states and have had chess coaches helping the for quite a while. Travis received a provisional rating of 107!

Star also scored 1 win 1 draw and 5 loses in this tournament. There was a bit of a mix up in registration, resulting in her first game being played in the wrong section the K-12. This was corrected and she was moved to the K8U750 section, where she won her first game! She rating changed to 216.

We also had two from Montgomery Central compete: Georga scored 2 wins 1 draw and 4 loses. Not bad for the first time. She received a provisional rating of 261. Cooper also played his first tournament, scoring 3 wins 4 losses. Giving him a provisional rating of 501. Not bad for first timers!

Many others helped with the smooth flow of the tournament. Thanks to all of them.

3-24-2009 This weekend Autumn and Colton competed in the 2009 Tri-State Spring Chess Open in Evansville, Indiana. Colton had a wonderful result scoring 4 wins with only 1 loss!! He was clear second place, with a $50 award!! His rating went from 758 to 776. He played some really good chess. Great job!
Autumn tied for 6th in her division, playing up in several rounds. She took down a 1500+ opponent and was on the verge of beating a 1700 player. Her rating went form 1254 to 1288, scoring three wins, two losses. Good work!
03-05-2009 Several new faces have been seen at the Clarksville Chess Club's new meeting site, the Woodward Library on the campus of APSU. Growth is certainly a possibility with such a nice site. Club tournaments as well as rated tournaments are on the horizon. If we get enough participation from our long term members, we could grow in to a very enjoyable club.

We began our chess lessons today. If this month long series goes well, we will plan more. Lessons begin at 6:30 pm and are open to all, with a minimal ($5.00) charge to cover expenses for materials.

The 2008 results are in.

Chess Player of the Year:  Cheston Miller -  Cheston was the most improved scholastic player in the club in 2008. He increased his rating by 129 points. He had the highest winning percentage of any player in the club, winning an amazing 69.23% of his games. He also held the highest scholastic average tournament score of 3 points per tournament.

Most active Adult player:   Richard Higgins - Richard played in three tournaments (11 games) and gained 37 rating points.

Most improved Adult player:  Roy Manners - Roy increased his rating by 82 points. Roy accomplished this by winning 60% of his tournament games.

Most active Scholastic player:  Colton Douthitt - Colton played in eight tournaments, 38 rated games and scored 22.5 points.

01-17-2009 Autumn and Colton played in the 2009 Murray Scholastics this weekend. Autumn scored an impressive 4-0, winning all of her games. She picked up 53 rating points, going to 1256! A great result. (see Game of the Week section)
Colton wound up in a tie for 5th place scoring 2 wins with 2 loses. He picked up 6 rating points.

Roy competed in the 2009 TN Class Championship in Nashville, winning his class! He is the 2009 Tennessee Class D chess champion! Congratulations. Roy played up every round. First 2 rounds he spotted his opponent 300 rating points, In the next two, he was over rated by 200 points, in the last round he was the underdog by 100 points. How did he do?
1503=draw!...1537=draw!...1456=draw!...1437=loss...1305=draw. To walk away with one loss against players rated that much higher, amazing!! Note also that Roy had the advantage in several of those games, but his fear of the endgame, caused him to offer the draw. He will work on that aspect of his game, then beware!! Congratulations!

10-27-2008 Autumn and Colton played in the 29th MSU Open this weekend. Colton scored 2 wins and 2 loses, which was good enough for a tie for 6th place in the Amateur Section AND a tie for first in the under 800 class. This put him in the prize money! Way to go Colton!    Autumn finished in a tie for 3rd in the Amateur section scoring 3 wins and 1 heartbreak loss. A piece ahead, with an attack, she overlooked a one move mate and lost.
Colton moves from 772 to 782, Autumn dropped from 1136 to 1119, due to the surprise loss.
10-06-2008 THE CLARKSVILLE CHESS CLUB MEETING  DAY  IS CHANGING: The Chess Club meeting day will change from Thursdays to FRIDAYS!!  October 16th will be the last Thursday meeting of the year. Beginning October 24th, meetings will be held on Fridays at 7:00pm. We hope this change will be suitable to all.
09-20-2008 Autumn and Colton played in the '2008 Wright Scholastic Tournament' with fair results overall. Both lost rating points - Autumn dropping from 1151 to 1136 and Colton going from 799 to 772. Autumn wound up with 3 wins and 2 loses, to finish in a tie for 7th out of 29, not bad. Colton had 2 wins against 3 loses, finishing 19th out of 34.
We look for better results this year as they enter the Scholastic season. Good luck guys.
09-03-2008 Bill Bragg entered the Tennessee Open this Labor Day weekend and had a splendid result. Overall he tied for 4th. He gained 38 rating points taking his rating up to 1930. He finished with 3.5 of 5. Round one he beat a 1651 player, round two he drew standing State Champion Todd Andrews, rated 2375, round three he was defeated by master Jerry Wheeler, rated 2200; round four Bill defeated a 1697 rated player; and round five he destroyed a 1907 rated player. He was first in the class A standings, and took home a nice prize. Great job!
6-23-2008 Blake, Autumn and Colton have returned from the Memphis Chess Camp where they rubbed elbows with some of the greats. In addition to lessons and simultaneous exhibitions, Autumn and Colton finished up with a tournament.

Autumn and Colton did very well.

Autumn was playing in the top section at the camp and scored 1.5/3, gaining +34 rating points. Her new rating is 1188. Her last opponent only had a king and Autumn had a king and 2 pawns, but she only had 1 minute left on her clock. She offered a draw to the boy thinking that if she ran out of time she would lose -- she had forgotten the rule regarding insufficient winning material. She now knows that rule!

Colton played 3 rounds winning all 3. He thought the tournament was over, sat back to chill and was proud of himself. At the last minute the TD decides to have a "bonus round." Colton was not ready; he thought the tournament was over. However, he did very well (3/4). He gained +111 in rating. He went from 688 to 799, his highest rating to date.

Meanwhile, some people are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness rubbed on them. Blake has been seen with the "Yerminator" and therefore, he is unbeatable. (The chess club will test this 'rubbing' theory Thursday!)

1-19-2008  Robert James Fischer died Thursday, January 17, 2008. Though his mind slipped away a couple of decades after he won the world championship in 1972, he was the greatest chess player of all time. He single handedly defeated the Soviet system, a seemingly impossible feat: the best players in the world, matching wits against a single man. Yet, David slew Goliath.
