6-23-2008 Blake, Autumn and Colton have returned from the Memphis Chess Camp where they rubbed elbows with some of the greats. In addition to lessons and simultaneous exhibitions, Autumn and Colton finished up with a tournament.

Autumn and Colton did very well.

Autumn was playing in the top section at the camp and scored 1.5/3, gaining +34 rating points. Her new rating is 1188. Her last opponent only had a king and Autumn had a king and 2 pawns, but she only had 1 minute left on her clock. She offered a draw to the boy thinking that if she ran out of time she would lose -- she had forgotten the rule regarding insufficient winning material. She now knows that rule!

Colton played 3 rounds winning all 3. He thought the tournament was over, sat back to chill and was proud of himself. At the last minute the TD decides to have a "bonus round." Colton was not ready; he thought the tournament was over. However, he did very well (3/4). He gained +111 in rating. He went from 688 to 799, his highest rating to date.

Meanwhile, some people are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness rubbed on them. Blake has been seen with the "Yerminator" and therefore, he is unbeatable. (The chess club will test this 'rubbing' theory Thursday!)

1-19-2008  Robert James Fischer died Thursday, January 17, 2008. Though his mind slipped away a couple of decades after he won the world championship in 1972, he was the greatest chess player of all time. He single handedly defeated the Soviet system, a seemingly impossible feat: the best players in the world, matching wits against a single man. Yet, David slew Goliath.
