Basic Chess Endings:

K+P vrs K

So, you want to learn how to play Pawn endgames? I hope you know that the endgame is the least forgiving part of the game of chess, you may have only one move that wins or one move that draws in a particular position. Playing the endgame well requires a complete understanding of the fundamental positions. And it all begins with pawn endings. Why? I'm glad you asked! Understanding pawn endings allows you to transition from more complex endings to the simplified pawn endgame. For example, if you are in a Rook ending, you will be afforded opportunities to exchange Rooks. Unless you understand the resulting Pawn ending, you will not be able to make the correct decision, and that may be difference between winning or losing or even drawing the game.

That having been said, we must start at the beginning. We will be looking first at the most Basic of Chess Endgames: King and Pawn vrs King.  The positions in diagrams below form the building blocks of King and Pawns vrs King endings. If you understand everything there is to understand concerning those diagrams, you might as well skip to the next section, otherwise, don't leave this section until you fully understand them.
